Vaughn Park handled Sergeant Duties for us.  He confided that this is the first time in his many, many years of service in Rotary that he has ever been Sergeant.  His broad smile made us all a little uneasy as he levied his fines on the group.  When he was done we were all relieved, in more than one way!

SPEAKER

Danny Prager introduces David Hart

Danny Prager introduced David Hart, Director of the Romney Institute of Public Management and Business Ethics Professor at Brigham Young University.  Mr. Hart stated that ethics is more than wanting to do right.  He shared the fraud triangle with us, the three parts of which are Opportunity, Pressure and Rationalization.  He stated that sometimes things that have bad outcomes.  Sometimes people become so busy that they didn't have time to see what was going on around them. He noted that if someone or something annoys us, it is easier to justify bad behavior.
David Hart, Speaker

If we are in a hurry or warn down (ego depletion), we are less likely to help others or do right things.  The remedies are to control our environment by removing temptations, acquire good role models and be one ourselves, get feedback about our actions, practice ethical behavior, think reflectively about our actions, have a sounding board, maintain the attitude that I can walk away from a bad situation, maintain your intensity by making up your mind to be good, and be a little nervous about how your actions are affecting others.

David Hart's final advice was to try to reflect on a situation and what to do before the temptation arises.  He quoted Aristotle as saying that "We are what we repeatedly do".
