Report of the Provo Rotary Luncheon Meeting March 7, 2013

The meeting was conducted by President Vaughn Park. Dinner music was provided by Ron Roberts.The singing was conducted by Jill Moon. Darrell Jakins offered an invocation.

Guest from the Provo Police
Guests included Robert Payne and Preston Bascom of the Provo Police Department, guests of Chief Rick Gregory. Jim Lauret was visiting from the Mt. Timpanogos Rotary Club.

Birthdays were celebrated for those with March dates: Andy Anderson, Frank Gardner, Mike Jacobsen, Vic Ludlow,  Steve Smith and Gary Wiest.

Ron Pugh
Darrell Jakins reported that he has been working with the insurance company about details of the claim from his company's fire last month. The are operating their business successfully from another location.

Ron Pugh reported on his recent humanitarian trip to Guyana. They had five eye doctors and saw about 2,000 patients giving away donated eyeglasses. Their next trip will be in two years to Peru.

Jim Lauret
Jim Lauret of the Mt. Timpanogos Rotary Club distributed information about a dinner he is hosting in his home March 22 to raise funds for his Rotary club. They will have a five-course dinner for $50 per couple. Call 801-787-9116 for details.






Wayne Beesley
Wayne Beesley promoted the club's annual girls night family party next Thursday, March 14 at Riverside Country Club. Each Rotarian and one guest are invited at no charge. Additional guests will be $25 per person charged on the quarterly statement. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. followed by a performance of Celtic Dreams, the Westlake High School ballroom dance team.

Contributions for the Provo Recreation Center climbing wall are being sought from each Provo Rotarian. The club has pledged $50,000 over three years. Call Scott Smith (801-376-1339) to contribute.

Steve Sabins
Steve Sabins introduced today's speaker, Paul Glauser, director of the Provo City Redevelopment Agency, who spoke about happenings on Provo's Center Street. He commented that Center Street is undergoing the largest change in 100 years:

   There are currently fifty eating spots.

   Needed are visitor-oriented clothing and other retailers.

   Downtown needs businesses that will foster people staying downtown with an emphasis on college students attractions.

   Businesses are invited to "re-think" their sidewalk appeal.

   The old tabernacle is undergoing meticulous renovation to become the Provo City Center LDS Temple. Currently the building is on stilts while a 40-foot deep basement is being excavated.

   Residential development is coming with a 41-unit apartment building planned for East Center where the Paramount Theater was once located. Here are some of the slides he presented:
