Ron Roberts an unsung hero

Carol Walker was acknowledged for her work with the "Chalk the Block" fund raiser in the community. This was a well attended event at the Riverwoods shopping mall where numerous local artists and aspiring artists demonstrated their skills with chalk art.  (Editors Note:  Pete Pletsch's daughter Rebecca Pletsch was one of the featured artists. Nathan Beesley extracted the appropriate fine when this was pointed out to the club.)

Speaker

Jeff Alexander introduces today's speaker
Natalie Gochnour, our speaker

Jeff Alexander introduced Natalie Gochnour, Economist for the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and Associate Dean in the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah.  Natalie updated us on the current status of the economy in Utah.  Highlights included that our state's unemployment rate is currently 4.6% which is getting close to full employment and one of the lowest in the country.  The national average is 7.4%.  Job growth in Utah is running at 3.5% which is double the national average at a meager 1.7%.  Clearly Utah is doing very well compared to the rest of the nation.  Natalie suggested that this was because of good decision making within the state.  However, she also noted that we are at risk of bad decisions made at the national level, which could seriouly negatively impact our economy.  She also answered questions after her presentation which included a prediction that interest rates should remain approximately where they are for the near term. Details of her presentation follow below.
