Prior to the events of September 11, 2001 the FBI worked mostly on cases referred to them but after that “watershed” event they changed their paradigm with counter-terrorism being their first priority. They have become proactive with “threat radar” to detect terrorism threats which are shared with all federal intelligence agencies and with state and local agencies.
The FBI serves as both 1) domestic intelligence gatherer, and 2) federal law enforcement agency for the US. There have been more active attacks on the homeland in the last twelve months than any time since 9-11. Cyber criminals are very dangerous trying to disrupt computer systems at banks, government, intelligence and corporate facilities. Every FBI office has a cyber squad.
There have been significant securities fraud problems in Utah – up 500% in the last twelve months to around $1.2 B. There is also a small %-age of public servants who are corrupt and can do great damage.
The FBI will always welcome help from the public with tips of illegal activities. Don’t ever hesitate to call the FBI. They are also looking for new employees with foreign language ability, especially with Arabic and Farsi.
