Don Jarvis introduces Speaker Miller

Don Jarvis introduced today's speaker Shawn Miller, Associate Dean in Humanities at BYU.  Shawn talked about urban walking spaces and the possibility of having walking space in downtown Provo.  He indicated that walking spaces can be effective when they are safe and comfortable for people to be there.  Comfortable in this sense means quiet.  He showed successful urban walking places dating back to Lijubaan in Rotterdam, Netherlands which was implemented in 1953.  He noted that cars turn streets into single us improvements.

Shawn showed old demographic trends like urban and white flight being countered by Millenials who want an urban life style.  He then talked about what Provo could do to create urban walkways.  He talked conceptually about what an urban walking space between 500 West and University on Center Street could look like.  He indicated that demographically and infrastructure wise, Provo has the best opportunity to create an urban walkway of any city in Utah.
