Speaker

John Lewis introduces Speaker
Speaker, Tom Holmoe, BYU Athletic Director

Tom Holmoe at Green Bay
Jennefer Hansen, BYU All American
Tom Holmoe talked about his love for sports and people.  He said one of the things he loves about his job is his interaction with BYU athletes.  He talked about people that lifted and supported him as a youth.  He felt they had help make him successful by providing opportunities and encouragement.  He talked about the responsibility that BYU and the Community have to lift BYU athletes.  He said it is something he tries to do every day.

Tom told the story of Jennefer Hansen who he described as an amazing person.  He told about a game where she was hit in the face and had her nose broken.  As soon as the bleeding stopped she returned to the game to support and help her team.  A week later the same thing happened and again she returned to the game to help her team.

He talked about relationships.  Quoting John Maxwell, he talked about the 5 stages of relationships.  First is a surface relationship which has no permanence.  Second is a structured relationship where people are brought together through common interests.  Third is a secure relationship where people spend time with people they want to spend time with.  Fourth is a solid relationship which are relationships where there is complete trust and absolute confidence.  And fifth is a significant relationship which is a relationship that the participant goes beyond reason to affect the other parties to the relationship.  He said a sports team is a structured relationship but can develop to a higher level, as the example of Jennefer Hansen indicates.
