Report of Provo Rotary Luncheon Meeting January 24, 2013


The meeting was conducted by President Vaughn Park. Dinner music was provided by Ron Roberts. The singing was conducted by Jill Moon. Chanse Carlson offered an invocation.

Guests: Dan Ellertson introduced Keith Frogley. Stan Miller introduced Chris Matthews of the Aclaime Group and Blair Giles from the Fredette Family Foundation. Ray Beckham welcomed Clark Merkley of the Leavitt Group.

President Vaughn Park announced that Lorna Flickinger, wife of former Rotarian Dwight Flickinter (deceased) has cancer.

President Vaughn Park reminded board members of the upcoming board meeting February 7.

Jeff Alexander introduced today's speaker, Dick Harmon, sports columnist for the Deseret News. Dick commented that this past ten days has been one of the most unusual in sports history with:

     .The firing of the entire BYU football offense staff
     .The Lance Armstrong confession of years of lies
     .The revelation of Manti Te'o and his phantom girlfriend

He spoke at some length about these three unusual stories then answered questions from Rotarians about:

   Aaron Roderick who left the football coaching staff at the University of Utah, was hired as a football coach at BYU, then returned to the football coaching staff at the U -- all within 24-hours;

   Riley Nelson's quarterbacking career at BYU;

   Ty Detmer and the possibility of him coaching at BYU;

   All the BYU quarterback drama of this past football season;

   Jabari Parker;

   John Beck;

   The difficulty BYU has recruiting because of the university's honor code;

   BYU football independence;

   BYU's broadcasting facility makes it unique in all the world;

   BYU basketball v Gonzaga;

   Jimmer Fredette and his possibility of coming to the Utah Jazz.
