Report of Provo Rotary Luncheon Meeting January 17, 2013


Jill Moon
The meeting was conducted by President Vaughn Park. Dinner music was provided by Ron Roberts. The singing was conducted by Jill Moon. David Rogers offered an invocation.

Eric Lafferty
Eric Lafferty was introduced as a guest representing the United Way of Utah Valley.

President Vaughn Park thanked Gary Wiest and his committee for the outstanding Christmas party we all enjoyed in December.

Scott Smith
Scott Smith has been asked to chair a committee to raise funds for the Rotary Club's pledge of $50,000 toward an endowment for the Provo Recreation Center now nearing completion. Each member is urged to commit $100, $500 or $1,000 per year for three years. He made a short presentation.

Val Hale and Carol Walker
Chanse Carlson and Frank Gardner
Carol Walker introduced Val Hale as a new member of the Provo Rotary Club. Val is the president of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce. Frank Gardner then introduced Chanse Carlson as a new member of the Provo Rotary Club. Chanse is president of Bonneville Bank. Welcome Val and Chanse!

David Rogers
David Rogers served as sergeant for the day.

Jeff Alexander introduced Dr. Jose Enriquez of Latinos in Action, a program operating in the Provo and Alpine School Districts. Before joining the Alpine School District Jose was on the faculty at Timpview High School. He received his doctorate from BYU funded partially by a Rotary scholarship from a club in California.

Latinos in Action is in 102 high schools from St. George to Logan. The goal is to get Latino students to focus on college graduation by becoming bilingual and developing the cognitive and social skills necessary to function successfully in American culture. By becoming leaders they can help fellow Latinos who are struggling with literacy and will create a stage for them, allowing them to thrive.
