UVU announced last week that it has accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference, the sixth oldest conference in the NCAA. Joining the WAC presents a chance for post-season competition. Since the announcement all season tickets, sponsorships and donations have increased. They have let a contract for improvements to the UCCU Center for a jumbo-tron, electronic ribbons around the arena and a new sound system. It will be the best basketball facility in the WAC. UVU already has the best baseball facility. However, hosting a football program doesn't seem to be an option in the near term.
UVU will soon begin hosting a men's soccer program, the only Division 1 program in Utah other than club teams. Six years ago they began a wrestling program, the only college in Utah with this program.
It will cost the university more to be in the WAC than in the other conferences they've been in. Referees for athletic programs will cost more.
