President Steve Densley reminded everyone of the upcoming summer parties and events:

Thursday evening, July 19: Summer Boys Night at the Orem Owlz

Paul Warner reminded everyone of the annual Freedom Festival Patriotic Service this coming Sunday Evening at the UCCU Center at UVU at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited.

Each quarter Provo Rotarians contribute $25 ($100 per year) to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Those funds are then submitted to Rotary International each June. Each $1,000 donation per person is rewarded by Paul Harris Fellowship.

Paul Harris Plus One: Densley, Wiest, Hudnall, Jackson, Feller, Hymas

As we continue to contribute $100 per year those donations eventually earn a second (or 3rd, 4th, etc.) Paul Harris Fellowship for each Rotarian. As a result of the recent donations for the 2011-2012 Rotary year, the following Provo Rotarians have each earned an additional PHF:

Craig Carlile
Dale Jackson
Steve covey
Vaughn Park
Eduardo Nunez
Gary Wiest
Greg Hudnall
Merrill Hymas
Kirk Parkinson
Jim Calder
Dean Jackson (plus 2)
Steve Densley
Wayne Beesley
Wil Feller

Those from the above list who were in attendance were given a Paul Harris pin with a blue sapphire recognizing this next level of giving.

President Steve Densley noted that Scott Smith's company, Qualtrics, was featured in Forbes Magazine as Utah's Hidden Gem. To view the article click: http://www.forbes.com/sites/victoriabarret/2012/05/15/qualtrics-techs-hidden-gem-in-utah/

Vaughn Park
President-elect Vaughn Park presented a check for $1,800 as a grant from the Utah Rotary district to be used for development of park project in Provo.

Greg Hudnall served as sergeant leading a standing ovation for our outgoing club president Steve Densley while raising a little money for the club's foundation.

Todd Jenkins
Ray Beckham introduced speaker Todd Jenkins, General Manager of Berg Mortuary, who spoke about his company's 140-year history as one of Provo's oldest businesses. Carl Berg, owner, is a long-time Provo Rotarian and the fourth generation owner of this storied institution.

He spoke about the funeral business in general and the specifically about Berg. The average funeral cost for Berg is around $5,000 complete which is competitive. Berg has an advantage in that they have no debt.

It's popular to pre-arrange and pre-pay for funerals. Todd mentioned one recently in which the deceased had pre-arranged everything: selected his casket, wrote his funeral program, paid for his burial plot and headstone, and took all the worry and angst from his family. Approximately 120 man-hours are required by Berg to handle all the arrangements for a typical funeral.

Cremation is becoming more popular. About 12% of people in Utah Valley are choosing cremation compared to around 18-20% in Salt Lake Valley. Even though the body is cremated, most families are still electing to hold a funeral.

Cemetery plots at the Provo Cemetery are currently $900. In East Lawn they are $2,500.
