Report of Provo Rotary Meeting Held September 4, 2014


President Ricky Hood conducted todays meeting.  Jill Moon lead the singing of the Nation Anthem and conducted the Pledge of Allegence with Ron Roberts accompaning the National Anthem on the piano.  Following the pledge, Tom Powell gave the opening prayer. 

Announcements included discussion of the United Way Day of Service. Chaplain Vic Ludlow discussed Wayne Beesley.  Guests at today's meeting included Charlotte Clark visiting with Ricky Hood. Tyler Vigue handled Sergeant duties, fining those who did not their history of the Rotary Club.

Jonathan Cavender was announced as the new Secretary of the club (much to the pleasure of Pete Pletsch).



SPEAKER



Carol Walker introduced our speaker Dana Layton, co-founder of Best of State.  She talked about the the origin of the Best of State, how the competition is run and voted on, and the benefits to the community and state from the program.

Our speaker this week was Sven Wilson, professor and chair of the Political Science Department at BYU.  Sven is also the visionary and founder of the Character First movement as highlighted on the Doug Wright show on KSL radio . For this week's meeting,  Sven focused his thoughts on rejecting the populist movement circulating in today's politics and spoke about the necessity of a strong leader who shows compassion and isn't afraid to admit when he or she is wrong. Just another way to keep politics civil and promote goodwill in all aspects of life.

Glenn Jakins visits Rotary

Today we were pleased to hear from Glenn Jakins. After being introduced by his brother and our fellow Rotarian Darrell Jakins, we were able to hear about his innovations and business ventures, as well as his journeys from Johannesburg, to Cape Town, to London, and eventually Utah.
