Report of the Provo Rotary Luncheon Meeting March 28, 2013

The meeting was conducted by President Vaughn Park. Dinner music was provided by Ron Roberts. The singing was conducted by Jill Moon. Ruth Riley offered an invocation.

Guests included Janette Beckham, Janice Gilchrist, Judy Park and Mary Allen Redd, all wives of Rotarians.

 Paul Warner reported that Strat Wendelboe is in the Riverwoods Specialty Hospital recovering from a bout of pneumonia.


The monthly board meeting is next Thursday at 11:00.

President Vaughn Park spoke about the annual Rotary district conference May 3-5, Friday to Sunday in Ogden.  

David Rogers served as sergeant for the day.

Steve Sabins introduced Rebecca Lockhart, Speaker of the Utah House of Representatives, who reported on the

annual Utah legislative session. She spoke about several highlights including fully funding public education plus giving a 2% to graded pupil growth and an additional $50 million to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). They allocated $55 million for a new classroom building at UVU and an additional $20 million for other higher education uses. There are continuous improvements in road building and maintenance. Alcohol policy kept the "Zions curtain" and approved issuance of master liquor licenses to chain restaurants. She also spoke about Utah's demands on the federal government to relinquish control of millions of acres of land in Utah and other western states as was agreed to at statehood.

She also fielded questions from the group about gun control, gay marriage, air quality which improves measurably each decade, the culture of life in Utah and the political future of John Swallow.
