Report of the Weekly Luncheon Meeting held June 16, 2011

 
Today's meeting was held at the Provo Downtown Marriott Hotel with Stan Miller conducting. Dinner music was provided by Ron Roberts. Jill Moon lead the singing of the anthem and the pledge. An invocation was offered by Dan Ellertson.
 
 
Next week's Rotary luncheon will be held Monday, June 20 at Riverside Country Club in conjunction with the club's annual charity fundraiser, the Rotary Festival Classic. All members are invited to lunch at 12:30 and to stay for the auction following.
 
 
The following Thursday evening, June 23, will be the annual Boys Night at the Orem Owlz Ballpark. All Provo Rotarians and a guest are invited to the hamburger/hot dog barbecue and ball game. Extra guests will be charged $15 each.
 
 
Andy Anderson served as sergeant inviting everyone to get involved with helping with the golf tournament next Thursday.
 
 
Stan Miller introduced Alan Blom, a member of our club for over five years, who spoke about a new book he has written about the Biblical book of Isaiah. It was an interesting presentation with several new items of interest presents. Good work, Alan!

Our speaker this week was Sven Wilson, professor and chair of the Political Science Department at BYU.  Sven is also the visionary and founder of the Character First movement as highlighted on the Doug Wright show on KSL radio . For this week's meeting,  Sven focused his thoughts on rejecting the populist movement circulating in today's politics and spoke about the necessity of a strong leader who shows compassion and isn't afraid to admit when he or she is wrong. Just another way to keep politics civil and promote goodwill in all aspects of life.

Glenn Jakins visits Rotary

Today we were pleased to hear from Glenn Jakins. After being introduced by his brother and our fellow Rotarian Darrell Jakins, we were able to hear about his innovations and business ventures, as well as his journeys from Johannesburg, to Cape Town, to London, and eventually Utah.
