Birthdays were celebrated for June: Wayne Beesley, Wil Feller, and Bernie Smith.

The BYU Rotaract Club, sponsored by our club, has received the distinguished Presidential Citation from Rotary International. Our club also received the Presidential Zone Literacy award.

Linda Pemberton was thanked for planning a successful family outing (Girls Night) held last week. More than fifty Rotarians and guests had dinner and attended a concert.

Steve Royster served as sergeant spotlighting Ray Beckham, Linda Palmer and himself with short biographies about themselves and family.

Bryant Larsen introduced the speaker Paul Glauser, Director of the Provo City Redevelopment Agency, who spoke about many changes taking place in downtown Provo called “Center Focus”:

•Downtown Provo is the government and financial center of Utah County.

•The State has reported plans to enlarge the courthouse at 125 West 100 North.

•Two new high-rise banks have recently opened (Wells Fargo and Zions Bank).

•A new 122,000 square foot convention center will begin construction later this month on
the block just west of the Marriott Hotel. The first phase is already funded for $40 million

•A Hyatt Place hotel will be built on the site of the old Zions Bank at 111 North Freedom.
•High-density residential housing is also planned for that block plus a 560 car parking terrace.

•Nu Skin has announced the addition of a new high-rise office tower on property they own just west of their current office tower at 100 West and Center Street. The former Kress and Mountain Fuel buildings will be demolished to make way for the new building. The two towers will be connected by a covered atrium on property now occupied by 100 West between Center and 100 South.

•The University Towers project on the Knight Block (NE corner of Center and University) will be an 11-story office/housing tower with access from both East Center and North University.

•The Frontrunner commuter rail station is now under construction at 6th South and Freedom Boulevard with opening scheduled for 2013 when rail service will begin.

•Bus Rapid Transit will be constructed from Novell to the Orem transfer station with dedicated traffic lanes and stops along University Avenue and at BYU.

•The Provo Center Street interchange of I-15 is now under re-construction. Property around that new interchange is the most under-utilized opportunity in town.

Next Week’s Meeting will (June 10) be at the Park Animal Hospital

Dr. Vaughn Park, long-time Provo Rotarian, has recently completed a large addition to the former Alpine Animal Hospital and has renamed it. The club will meet there for lunch and speaker plus a tour of the new facilities. The address is 1615 South State Street, Provo (the Provo/Springville highway about a mile south of the Provo Cemetery, east side of the road).

Provo Rotary Club Charitable Golf Tournament - June 21, 2010 Riverside Country Club
We are beginning the planning for our annual golf tournament that benefits children’s charities.

We will again be teaming with the America’s Freedom Festival at Provo to make our event a
part of the month-long activities of the Festival. Contact Linda Palmer, Committee Chair, for
more information or if you desire to be involved in some way. linda.palmer@byu.edu.

Provo Rotary Club is teaming with Provo City to be involved in providing needed amenities for
two more public parks in Provo. The city has asked for our cooperation in providing improvements to the former Rotary Park in Provo Canyon near Bridal Veil Falls, and for the large public park adjacent to the Vintage neighborhood in the Riverwoods area. Our club leadership is also proactive in discussions with Provo City on the proposed new city recreation center to be constructed in central Provo between 500 and 700 North and between 200 and 500 West.
