Report of the Provo Rotary Club meeting held June 10, 2010

The Rotary luncheon was held at the Park Animal Hospital and Pet Resort. Past-president Jack May conducted the meeting. Clayson Lyman offered an invocation.

Guests visiting today were:
    •Matt Montague
•Judy Park, wife of our host Dr. Vaughn Park
•Tamara Tolley, wife of Steve Tolley

Strat Wendelboe has been in the hospital for pulmonary problems and is now in rehab at the Utah Valley Specialty Hospital in Riverwoods. He would love to have you visit him.

In lieu of the regular sargeant Jack May fined Vaughn Park for hosting today’s event and Dean Jackson. Andy Anderson voluntarily fined himself for reasons unknown.

Bryant Larsen introduced the speaker David Bayles, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Utah Valley. He has been in this position for seven years. He cited some of the positive things taking place at the club’s six locations around the valley and in Green River:

•2,500 youth were served in 2009. Each attends an average of four times per week. There is a large waiting list but funding and facilities limit the number who can be served.
•70-90% of the youth served come from at-risk homes.
•The staff of the B&G club presented Internet safety training to over 100,000 students last year throughout the Valley through the public schools.
•They offer many programs to their youth from leadership to substance abuse.
•The B&G club is a prevention program - designed to keep kids out of trouble.
•The average cost is $458 per youth per year, but the family of each youth only pays $10.
•They will soon begin a reading proficiency program.
•With additional funding the B&B club would like to build large permanent facilities in the north and south ends of the valley.

Dr. Vaughn Park and his staff gave tours of the newly expanded facility which serves around 600 patients each month, mostly dogs and cats. With the addition they have kennel capacity for 75 dogs and nearly that many cats.
