Don Jarvis introduced speakers Christine Johansen, Miss Provo 2009-2010, who spoke briefly about her year representing Provo, and Helen Anderson, Provo City Community Relations and Public Education Director. Helen told a few heartwarming stories about Provo's wonderful Police Department and reported on a recent national poll which placed Provo near the top of the country's safest cities. She spoke about the city's reduced income challenges and the recent budget development process which included each department in creating their own reduced budget. There was a recent change in city management which moved the economic development director, Dixon Holmes, to the Mayor's office and changed his title to Deputy Mayor for Economic Development.

News About the annual Provo Rotary Charity Golf Tournament

President Steve Sabins announced that Linda Palmer has agreed to chair the club’s 2010 charity golf tournament. In past years the event has been named after LaVell Edwards who has graciously hosted the event and helped raise funds for the several children’s charities who are beneficiaries. However, LaVell and Patti are hosting a private tournament in May for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Utah Valley and will not be participating with us this year. We wish them well and will support them in any way we can.

Last year our event joined with America’s Freedom Festival at Provo. That association will continue with the tournament being renamed the Rotary Festival Classic Charity Golf Tournament. It will take place at Riverside Country Club Monday, June 21, 2010. Please put that date on your calendar.

    Paul Harris Fellowships Awarded

Provo Rotary Club is well on its way to becoming a 100% Paul Harris Fellows club with more than 90% of members now owning this honor. Today six new recipients were honored adding to several others who have been awarded in recent weeks. There are still several more to be awarded in upcoming meetings.
