Speaker
Jeff Alexander introduced Vince Otoupal, UVU's new Athletic Director. Vince discussed the current status of UVU Athletics and his plan for the future. He noted that Mike Jacobson was legendary and his shoes can not be filled entirely. There are currently 7 mens and 7 womens sports programs at the UVU. Next year UVU will add men's soccer, which will become the only Division 1 Soccer program in the state. He said football is not in the foreseeable future for UVU.
Vince talked about the goal of UVU athletics as being "To help student athletes to be better people when they complete their time at UVU". He talked about helping athletes do best athletically, academically, and in their relationships in the community. He also talked about helping student athletes have "elevated speech" which means they can articulate who they are, where they are from, how their team is doing, something about the university, what they are studing and what they want to do after college while looking a stranger in the eyes.
