Report of Provo Rotary Luncheon Meeting June 21, 2012

Today's meeting was held at Riverside Country Club. President Vaughn Park conducted with Ron Roberts and Jill Moon providing the music. An invocation was offered by Carol Walker.

Charles Jones and Strat Wendelboe
Strat Wendelboe introduced his brother-in-law Charles Jones as his guest.

There will be no weekly luncheon meeting next week because of the annual Boys Night Family Party at the Orem Owlz ballpark at UVU.

President Vaughn Park served as sergeant asking anyone who has ever loved a pet to contribute $2.00 toward our club's foundation.

Dean Jackson
Vaughn Park introduced today's speaker, our own Dean Jackson, past-district governor and delegate to the recent Rotary International convention in Bangkok. He has traveled extensively with the current RI president, Sakuji Tanaka and spoke at length about this remarkable man. President Tanaka has always focused his life on efficiency and his business, a typical Japanese cultural trait. He didn't learn about service and peace until joining Rotary in 1975 (please see page 22 of the July 2012 Rotarian magazine).

Dean says his own closest friends in Provo and life are Rotarians. Rotary helps resolve areas of conflict around the world thus promoting peace. He encourages all Rotarians to attend an international Rotary conference, or to attend a local Rotary meeting in a foreign country. Rotarians are unique in their attitudes and demeanor. Everything in the Rotary culture is a by-product of relationships and service.

Dean says he finds himself defending Mormons wherever he goes around the world. There is often misunderstanding and he helps to correct those perceptions when he can.

Peace is a realistic goal through Rotary by:
   1. strengthening clubs through innovation and flexibility,
   2. focus and increase humanitarian service, the most important of which is to eradicate polio,
   3. Enhance public awareness and image of Rotary.

There will be three international peace forums this year in Hiroshima, Hawaii (Pearl Harbor) and Berlin, all sites of conflict in WWII.
