Report of the Rotary luncheon meeting held Thursday, March 10, 2011

The meeting was conducted by President Steve Tolley. Ron Roberts played dinner music and accompanied the Anthem which was lead by John Lewis. Phil Barker offered an invocation.

David Rogers announced that the Great West Conference basketball tournament is being held this week at Utah Valley University. Andy Anderson has free tickets. UVU, with a season record of 11-1, is the #1 seed in tournament play.

Tom Powell introduced speaker Ronnie Daniels, development director for the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy. A majority of those in attendance indicated they have visited the aquarium.
It was started by Brent Anderson in 1998. It moved to its present location in Sandy (700 East and 10600 South) in 2004 and has had 1.6 million visitors. There were 392,000 visitors in 2010 alone.

With a $2.5 million gift secured they plan to begin construction of a new aquarium this autumn on I-15 in Draper. The virtual tour makes it look like it will be a spectacular facility.
The aquarium employes between 53 and 65 employees with another 120 volunteers who work four hours per week. There are eighteen full-time educators who visit every Utah elementary school every year with their education outreach program.
