Report of the Provo Rotary Club meeting October 29, 2010

The Rotary luncheon was held at the Provo Downtown Marriott Hotel. President Steve Tolley conducted the meeting. Jill Moon lead and Ron Roberts accompanied the singing of the Anthem and Pledge. Gary Wiest offered an invocation.

President Steve Tolley presented a check for $1,000 to Steve Royster representing the Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This is a gift from the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation for the council's annual Gala Fundraising auction November 5, 2010.
President Steve Tolley presented a check for $500 to Andy Anderson representing the Boys and Girls Clubs of Utah Valley. This is a gift from the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation for the B&G club's annual fundraising auction November 19, 2010.

President Steve Tolley announced that the annual meeting of the club's past-presidents met earlier this week to select new officers for the club. They are:

President 2012-2013 Vaughn Park (will join the board immediately as president-elect nominee)
President 2013-2014 Glen Zaugg (will join the board July 10, 2011 as president-elect nominee)

Ruth Riley quizzed club members about tax changes coming up in 2011 and things that can be done now to plan:


1. When should you realize long-term gains?
2. Should you "harvest" capital losses this year?
3. Should you reallocate your portfolio?
4. Should you convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA?
5. When should you receive income?
6. Are charitable contributions more valuable in 2010 or later years?
7. Should you delay state and local tax payments?
8. When should you take nonqualified 529 plan and Education Savings Account distributions?
9. When should you exercise employer-granted stock options?
10. How should you manage tax-deductible business expenses?

Mike Jacobsen, introduced today's speaker, Coach Dick Hunsaker of the UVU basketball team, who spoke about the team's new members, the new conference in which they will be competing, and answered questions about the team. Rotary wishes the UVU athletic department and especially the basketball team the best for this season.
