Bulletin for the week of October 8-14, 2010

Report of the Provo Rotary Club meeting held October 7, 2010

The Rotary luncheon was held at the Provo Downtown Marriott Hotel. President Steve Tolley conducted the meeting. Jill Moon lead and Ron Roberts accompanied the singing of the Anthem and Pledge. Merrill Hymas offered and invocation.

Birthdays were celebrated for those with birthdays in October: Carl Berg, Curt Bramble, Steve Covey, Bruce Gilchrist, Joey Hansen, Vaughn Park, and Bonnie Wallace.

President Steve Tolley announced that the board has donated $1,000 to the Utah National Parks Council of the BSA for a table of 8 at their annual celebrity auction and dinner on November 5, plus $500 to the Boys and Girls Club for a table of 8 at their annual auction and November 19. Any club members who would care to attend either of these functions is invited to sit at the club’s table at no cost. Please contact Stan Miller (371-0400) to make reservations.

Jeff Alexander served as sergeant then Andy Anderson auctioned off one of Tamara Tolley’s famous quilts to raise money for the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation. It was purchased by Craig Carlile for $100.

Greg Hudnall introduced Provo Mayor John Curtis and the two of them spoke glowingly about the upcoming bond vote on November 2 to approve building a new Provo Recreation Center at North Park in Provo (500 North and 500 West). The plan is to demolish the current Eldred Center, former Boy Scout office, former armory (now called The Center) and the current aging Provo Rec Center attached to Provo High School. A new building would be built to contain all types of family recreation facilities including indoor swimming and an indoor track. The projected cost is around $38 million. With building costs so low right now the hope is that it will come in under budget so there will be no increase in property taxes to pay for it. But the current proposal is for approval of a modest property tax increase to be used if needed.
