Report of the Provo Rotary Club meeting held May 20, 2010

The Rotary luncheon was held at the Provo Marriott Hotel. President Steve Sabins conducted the meeting. Ron Roberts accompanied and Steve Tolley lead the singing of the Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. Julie Bolton offered an invocation.

The annual Girls Night social event for all Rotarians and their families will be held Tuesday evening, May 25 with a 5:30 dinner at the Provo Downtown Marriott Hotel followed by a walk to the Covey Center for a performance of the Wasatch Chorale. Each Rotarian and one guest are invited at no charge. Additional guests will be billed extra on the Rotarian’s quarterly statement.

President Steve Sabins announced that the district has a large number of points which can be used to match donations made to the Rotary International Foundation. This will be of particular interest to those who are not yet Paul Harris Fellows, or who wish to give a Paul Harris Fellowship to a family member or other loved one. A Paul Harris Fellowship is usually awarded for a $1,000 donation. In this case, the donation amount would be lowered to $500 and the matching points would complete the requirement for a Fellowship. See Stan Miller for more information. More than 85% of Provo Rotarians are now Paul Harris Fellows.

Steve Tolley reported on the district conference held last week in St. George. It was attended by several members of our club.

Linda Palmer reported on progress of the committee planning this year’s Rotary Festival Classic golf tournament to be held Monday, June 21 at Riverside Country Club. Several local children’s charities are beneficiaries of this event including Canary Gardens, Heritage Schools, the Provo School District Foundation, Utah National Parks Council, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Hope of America presentation of the Freedom Festival.

Greg Hudnall served as sergeant for the day talking about education in Provo. He reported that over $9,000,000 in scholarships was awarded this year to graduates of the three Provo city high schools: Timpview, Provo High and Independence High School.

Linda Palmer introduced Larry Duffin, Director of Special Events for BYU. Most special events are held in LaVell Edwards Stadium (28 years since it was expanded to its present size), the Marriott Center (now 39 years old and getting ready for an expansion) and the Smith Fieldhouse. There are over 300 events hosting more than 1.5 million guests each year. 95% of all special events are televised. Security is a major concern. There are 800 closed circuit security cameras monitored at a unified joint command center which covers activities in parking lots, at gates, in cash-handling areas, incoming weather, and numerous other locations.

Provo Rotary Club Charitable Golf Tournament - June 21, 2010 Riverside Country Club
We are beginning the planning for our annual golf tournament that benefits children’s charities.
We will again be teaming with the America’s Freedom Festival at Provo to make our event a
part of the month-long activities of the Festival. Contact Linda Palmer, Committee Chair, for
more information or if you desire to be involved in some way. linda.palmer@byu.edu.

Provo Rotary Club is teaming with Provo City to be involved in providing needed amenities for
two more public parks in Provo. The city has asked for our cooperation in providing improvements to the former Rotary Park in Provo Canyon near Bridal Veil Falls, and for the large public park adjacent to the Vintage neighborhood in the Riverwoods area. Our club leadership is also proactive in discussions with Provo City on the proposed new city recreation center to be constructed in central Provo between 500 and 700 North and between 200 and 500 West.
