Report of Provo Rotary Meeting Held February 19, 2015

President Ricky Hood conducted today's meeting.  The pledge was handled by President Hood and Ron led the anthem. Carol Walker gave the opening prayer. Sgt. at Arms duties were performed by Linda Pemberton, who asked a series of questions on NASCAR. No Chaplain report was made.
No guests were present. Ray Beckham then introduced the speaker.

Roger Thompson of Provo Parks and Recreation spoke on the benefits provided to the area by both the Parks side of the organization and the Recreation side of the organization.  He spoke on the things that the City of Provo was currently doing, the ways they were working to minimize the money needed from the community and become more self-sufficient, and plans for the future.

Our speaker this week was Sven Wilson, professor and chair of the Political Science Department at BYU.  Sven is also the visionary and founder of the Character First movement as highlighted on the Doug Wright show on KSL radio . For this week's meeting,  Sven focused his thoughts on rejecting the populist movement circulating in today's politics and spoke about the necessity of a strong leader who shows compassion and isn't afraid to admit when he or she is wrong. Just another way to keep politics civil and promote goodwill in all aspects of life.

Glenn Jakins visits Rotary

Today we were pleased to hear from Glenn Jakins. After being introduced by his brother and our fellow Rotarian Darrell Jakins, we were able to hear about his innovations and business ventures, as well as his journeys from Johannesburg, to Cape Town, to London, and eventually Utah.
