SPEAKER
David Rogers introduces our speaker
David Rogers introduced today's speaker Chief John King, of the Provo Police Department. Chief King was selected by Mayor Curtis as our new Police Chief in December 2013. Prior to coming to Provo, Chief King had a 30 year distinguished career in law enforcement. This includes being Director of the Police Academy at Hagerstown Community College, being the Chief of the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland Police Department, being the Director of Education and Training for the Baltimore Police Department and being a State Department presenter and adviser at numerous overseas locations.
Chief King talked about the remarkably low crime rate in Provo when compared to other cities our size. He also noted that the department was about one third the size of comparable cities. He talked about the New York City model of enforcing the small things, which had a big impact on reducing the crime rate. In answer to questions, he indicated concern that gangs have recently surfaced in the city. And the biggest drug issue seems to be Meth.
